About Us

BSHS Conferences & Events

The BSHS organises a wide range of events and conferences that support research, discussion, and exchange in the history of science. This includes some of the largest and most established events in the field, as well as smaller workshops and public-facing formats. Alongside in-person meetings, the Society increasingly supports online and hybrid events to broaden access and participation. Through these activities, the BSHS aims to foster networking, collaboration, and dialogue both within academia and across related knowledge cultures. Our events are designed to engage established scholars, early career researchers, and wider audiences alike.

Interested in organising a meeting?

If you have a suggestion for a possible future conference, symposium or public lecture which you think would benefit from BSHS support, we’d like to hear it. The BSHS may be involved at a variety of levels ranging from overall organization to financial or in-kind sponsorship. See BSHS Support for Events for further details.

BSHS

Support for Events

The BSHS is always looking for opportunities to start dialogues that involve the history of science. We organize conferences, workshops, seminars and outreach events for audiences ranging from schoolchildren to adults, and we are developing lots of new ideas for events in the history of science.

Enquiries about support for academic events (conferences, workshops etc) should go to the Conference Committee and enquiries about support for outreach activities should go to the Outreach and Education Committee.

Do you have an idea that you think would be useful as a BSHS event?

Let us know. Contact the Conference Committee (conference@bshs.org.uk) or Outreach and Education Committee Chair (outreach@bshs.org.uk), who will be happy to discuss your proposal and how to develop it. The information below relates to conference organization.

Are you trying to organise a conference and would like the BSHS to help organise it with you, or provide some support?

We can offer different forms of support depending on what you or your organisation/institution needs.

1. BSHS-organised event.

These are events that the BSHS is willing to take care of all the administration, programme, publicity and budget.

2. Joint event

These events are organised by the BSHS with one or more partners who share the organisation, budget, publicity and programme arrangements to reach the widest possible audience.

To help with planning and to adhere to our legal responsibilities, we ask to be involved with the planning and decision-making, to see the proposed budget and to be represented on publicity.

3. Financial Sponsorship

We will announce upcoming funding rounds on our website, across our social media channels, and through the usual history-of-science mailing lists.

4. Technical (in-kind) sponsorship

Non-financial support that helps with publicity, administration or programme advice for the event.

All we ask is that the BSHS support be recognised in the literature associated with the event.

If you would like to seek one of these forms of support or have an idea that you think we will be interested in, please contact the Outreach and Education Committee Chair (outreach@bshs.org.uk) for events related to public engagement, outreach, and education, or the Conference Committee (conference@bshs.org.uk) for events related to conferences, workshops, seminars, or symposia.

BSHS Annual Conference

The Annual Conference was revived in 2003 to provide an opportunity for scholars throughout the history of science, technology and medicine to meet and exchange ideas. Our inaugural meeting, in York, proved a resounding success, setting a pattern for the meetings in LiverpoolLeedsCanterburyManchesterLeicesterAberdeenExeterSt Andrews, and Swansea which have followed to date.

Beside a mixture of loosely-themed and highly specialised panels, and plenary sessions from distinguished speakers — including the biennial Presidential Address — meetings have included visits to local museums and other attractions; themed discussion sessions on teaching and learning; and a variety of social events ranging from the meticulously-planned to the bewilderingly impromptu. The Annual Conference fills an important role in terms of its scale: small enough to be easily surveyed, yet large enough to represent all fields, periods and levels of seniority within the profession.

BSHS Postgraduate Conferences

The BSHS Postgraduate Conference is an annual event, with recent meetings held in Manchester, Florence, Cambridge, London, Leeds, Canterbury, Durham, Brighton, Warwick, and Oxford. Postgraduates in all areas of the history of science, technology and medicine throughout the world are welcome to attend and give papers. Each conference is organised entirely by postgraduates from the host institution, and provides an ideal opportunity to meet fellow researchers and gain valuable early conference experience.

Would you like to bring BSHS PG to your institution?

The BSHS welcomes proposals from postgraduates keen to organise future meetings in the series. Your initial contact should be the BSHS Communications Officer: email news@bshs.org.uk.

BSHS Online Events

Contact: office@bshs.org.uk

The BSHS organises a range of online events, including digital festivals, large-scale virtual conferences, online lectures connected to our prizes, and focused workshops. These formats allow us to reach a wide and international audience and to experiment with new ways of exchanging knowledge. The Society also supports partner organisations with the technical infrastructure and online organisation of events, including international bodies such as the DHST. Where possible, recordings of online events are made available via the BSHS YouTube channel to extend their reach beyond the live event.
